ROUGH DRAFT - The Importance of Historical Accuracy in Video Games with Historical Settings

The Importance of Historical Accuracy in Video Games with Historical Settings

Though I am not sure how much of a fruitful pasttime it is to play the game at this point especially when it comes to single player there are important reasons why games such as Age of Emires II have significance.  They create an impact in three areas which I see.  Firstly they expose people to cultures and in a limited way even languages(mainly through unit speech) other than their own within a historical setting that is centuries removed from our own.   As such they create important culture l representations which will make a lasting impact on the minds of the users.  Secondly they provide artists a platform in which to recreate historical buildings, settings and other elements such as .

With the creators' and game development team's permission such elements may be repurposed to great effect to form part of historical documentaries.  They may be especially useful when producing such documentaries as those made by smaller independent Youtube creators such as Maioranus who focuses on the history of the late Roman empire though others may make use of them as well.  We have seen this already done when a total war game was used to recreate a battle scenario which was used to create video footage for a historical documentary.

A lot of work goes into creating media elements for video games based in historical settings and film and video game makers have started to pay much more attention to historical accuracy in more recent years.  A notable example is the role playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance which in my opinion has had a major impact as a historically accurate video game while being a quality role playing game.  It took many years of patching though before the game could be called a quality role playing game, but I believe the end result was worth the wait.  I have not played the game but I have watched review videos discussing the game made by Youtube creators who focus on history and historical weapons.  Youtube creators as the ones I've mentioned believe that when historical accuracy is emphasized in video games or films that the resulting media has a much higher entertainment value.  Also important to note is that consumers are often times inspired by historical media to explore historical facts, weapons or fighting techniques on their own.  However when they find that there is a broad disconnect between historical fact and the media that inspired them there can be frustration.  They may also find that much time and effort was wasted approaching historical research wrongly by focusing on the wrong topics, ineffective battle strategies, weapons or even attempting to emulate fighting techniques from such media which tend to be absolutely inaccurate and wholly ineffective.(note to self: insert source from Shadiversity to back this up later)

That said if video game makers and film producers were to continue in this trend we could help a new generation to enjoy high quality immersive experiences

Resonance22 Comments on AoE4 and his Resbot AI (RAW UNEDITED INTERVIEW NOTES)

( RAW UNEDITED NOTES from a Twitch Live Stream)
Note: ResonanceBot or 'Resbot" is Resonance22's Age of Empires Artificial Intelligence(AI)

  • RESONANCE22 INTERVIEW and STREAM NOTES:

  • Resonance22 is Talks While Streaming a DE Resbot Test Game
  • best AIs tell a story,  put a castle in the middle of your trade line.  it lost but ....

  • difference in difficulty levels:
  • they take relics at different rates
  • have a hard limit on how many resources they can send each other

  • exclusive content << pretty stupid A's and the mods crash all the time

  • "cyclical balance"  maybe the win rates are better between the civs

  • Blog post author asks:
@Resonance22 if resbots have a hard limit on how much they tribute each other wouuld that not limit them if the game goes on very long?

  • Resonance22:
It's on a timer system that loops.

  • Some thigns are hard coded in there
  • Hardest gets a bit of extra resources, it's not that much,
  • on hard it
  • they all sotp after a scert point

  • a lot of failsafes built in to keep it from getting stuck into a 6 hour game.

  • it does tone itself down a notch.
  • i don't like players feel llike they're making no progress

  • basically if u survive past 90 minutes it does not drop off a lot after that.

  • Other stream viewer: @Resonance22 what are your expectations of AOE4?

  • I am "cautiously optimistic "
  • but MS can not afford to mess this up

  • MS does rush releases sometimes though
  • i hope it will be good

  • similar to aoe2 is good

  • i wish it were in aoe1 timeline
  • I just want to see more games with the greeks
  • I love AoM

  • "i dont want them coming into this witha  stupid trilogy mindset"  < what did he mean
  • dont buy into the hype train for everythign you see
  • i learned this the hard way with Aoe2 DE and aoe1 DE

  • I will do content on AoE4

  • clearlly taking their time is the best news you could possibly give me

  • them taking their time to do something is a good thing

  • conntent creators will make content on aoe4 whether or not it's good
  • it makes money

  • I wont mllk aoe4 if it turns out to be mediocre

  • if it's great i will do a lot

  • i hope to see the series return to it's roots
  • i've heard it will

  • reasonable
  • easy for noobs
  • and enough depth for experts

  • nothign will replace aoe2
  • but it' is not supposed to replace aoe2
  • but it's going to be a good RTS game
  • DE did not replace Voobly

  • the reason the RTS gener is dead is because RTS games are too difficult to produce

  • i wouldn't ay it's dead, it's hibenrating

  • nostalgia is very big nowadays
  • at some point i would expect to see a resurgance
  • not a renaissance but an electros wing of rts games

  • we see games like
  • celeste, cave story

  • celeste is top 100 on metacritic and this speaks a volume to the indutsty
  • i would not be surprised an indie rts game be the best reviewed in 10 years
  • but that would only be one game

  • "too much strategy, too much to learn"
